MAY 2012 :
FIRST TURBINES ARRIVE AT WADLOW
The first turbine components for Wadlow Wind Farm arrived safely on site on Thursday 3rd May. The turbines are being transported in sections, with the blades, three tower sections, hubs and nacelles (the boxlike structure at the top of the tower that houses the gearbox and generator) delivered on separate, specially designed vehicles.
Our photo shows the first convoy approaching the turning to site off the A14. Further deliveries are scheduled over the next few weeks and you can find regular updates about the delivery schedule here.

APRIL 2012 :
TURBINE DELIVERY TO COMMENCE FROM 30th
APRIL
Work at Wadlow is progressing well. The next major event will be the delivery of the wind turbines. The components will start arriving on site from the week commencing 30th April and will continue for a period of 10 weeks.
The turbines will be transported with a police escort in sections (blades, two tower sections, hubs and nacelles*) using specially designed heavy goods vehicles. There will be one convoy per day, comprising a maximum of 3 vehicles per convoy. The convoys will depart from Great Yarmouth and arrive on site approximately 2.5 hours later. The deliveries have been scheduled to avoid rush hour traffic and will take place Monday to Friday, with an occasional delivery on Saturday.

COMMUNITY LIAISON GROUP INSPECT CONSTRUCTION
PROGRESS

Wadlow CLG members talk with Stephen Milloy, the Construction Site Manager (second left), on a crane hardstanding
On Thursday 24th November 2011, members of the Wadlow Community Liaison Group (CLG) visited Wadlow Wind Farm to gain an update on progress. The site visit was organised as part of RES's ongoing consultation with communities near the wind farm and was attended by representatives from West Wratting, Fulbourn, Great Wilbraham, Little Wilbraham & Six Mile Bottom, Balsham and Brinkley.
A presentation on progress combined with an opportunity to ask questions and a subsequent tour around site brought everyone up to date on the programme and gave the group the chance to see some of the construction works first hand.
Among the highlights was a view of the concrete turbine foundations in various stages of completion. These structures are not normally seen by members of the public, because they are backfilled and covered with top soil once they are completed. Another interesting aspect was the crane hardstandings, which have been created using a recycled plastic mesh. This is a relatively new technique and is considered less disruptive than traditional hardstanding because the mesh provides permanent stabilisation of the ground, but allows native vegetation to grow through.
As a result of the mild weather over the last few months, the hardworking construction team are currently ahead of schedule in some areas. The last of the foundations and grid connection cables have been laid and turbine delivery is on course for the new year, with generation predicted for June 2012.
